""Couldn't you just convert the money in your Traditional IRA into a Roth without worrying about having earned income or not?""

Correct, I could. If I knew I was going to live for quite a few more years, and I was going to get a good average return in my IRA, it would be worth it.

But, I'd sure hate to convert it all, pay a big tax bill, and drop dead the next day. So, I'll convert over to Roth as much as I can without jumping up into the next tax bracket.

Thanx for the comments.

If you've got a traditional IRA going now, and wondering about whether or not to convert over, and you plan to live well beyond 70 years, and you hate paying taxes, don't forget to overlook those required withdrawals that apply to a traditional and do not apply to a Roth. Hate to say it, but 70 comes faster than you expect, especially if you're having fun.
