"The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham is considered a classic "must-own" investing book. It is worth the read.

Check out the articles in the Fool's School on the main MF site. Lots of good information there.

I generally look for growing sales and EPS, decreasing debt loads, a P/E below historic averages and rising margins and ROE. If you can find stocks matching these criteria, they will usually do well for you, especially if they pay a decent dividend, and if the dividend is increased regularly.
