"Well, that and Joe Biden."Three things to consider. 1) Half of the democratic party votes come from minorities and non-minority gay folk. Hillary as Hillary lost the last time because she could not admit her vote on Iraq was a mistake, this time she has to live down her 2008 campaign where a vote for her was a "crack in the glass ceiling" but a vote for Obama wasn't. Add to that the racial comments coming out of her camp, her curious humor about Bobby Kennedy's assassination, and her overall expectation that the DNC would change the primary voting rules after the election was over to appoint her as the nominee rather than allow a Black primary winner.2)Biden has an in with two other dem constituent groups, Catholics and Gays. Absent Biden shooting his mouth off about gay marriage, Obama would still be sitting on the fence and we would not have this full throat-ed embracement of full civil rights for gay people.3) Obama actually lost the White women vote by a full 12 points. It was his overwhelming advantage with minorities and minority women that allowed him to win the women's vote overall. While there are, of course, significant numbers of women and White women in the democratic coalition, their likelihood of voting as a group is much lower than minorities that are still po'd at Hillary's prolonged display of "White Privilege".As food for thought, imagine what would have happened to the democratic party if the DNC had granted Hillary's wish, over-ruling the results of the primaries, telling the democratic party's most loyal constituency, "Sorry Charlie, we need someone White."
