"Why not just continue to hold (and ignore) those little spin-offs?"

I agree. Sometimes we (I) get too compulsive about cleaning up details that do not matter. I bought a few shares of a pharmacutical company called Dunhall in the early 70's. Got periodic reports and a couple requests to sell. To make it short, I got 24X my original investment last year when the outfit was boughtout. I would have got more, but the original letter from an attorney in Miami who made a great offer and I boutht his offer. Later I found out that the company really sold for more. Ah, such is life.
