"You might want to try Sears or Macy's or Penny's. I know that companies owner by the Limited (Victoria's Secret, Express) are much more stringent about who they approve for credit cards."
That's very interesting... Maybe I will give Macy's or another large store a try. Thanks.
You might also see if your bank has a card available. Credit unions were mentioned earlier, and are probably more friendly in terms of new credit, but a regular bank might be a place to try as well.
Also, you may qualify to join a credit union depending on where you live. In general, the criteria to join a credit union has been relaxed in the past few years. If you have a credit union in your area, stop in and talk to them. Their criteria may have changed since the last time you checked. Or they might be able to point you to another credit union that could help you if they cannot.
Good luck - I think you're doing a smart thing. I have had a credit card from my credit union since I was 16 (I'm now 25). I now have a 9 year positive credit history. It had a small limit, but I was able to establish an on-time payment history. Plus, if I didn't pay it on time, I was grounded from using the car - which really motivates a 16-year old to pay on time!!
