I would like to thank everyone for their contribution regarding healthcare in retirement. I'd also like to make some observations. Exercise, weight control, proper nutrition all contribute to well being but heart disease, cancer, accidents, infectious diseases afflict us all. We are all going to become debilitated as we age. We are not going to thwart the ravages of age. If we die quickly, quietly in bed that's not a problem. If we have an acute illness, i.e. gallbladder disease, appendicitis, pneumonia and recover quickly that is not a problem. But if we develop a chronic illness that requires medication, repeated hospitalization repeated ministrations, we then have a problem. If this is in doubt we need only to look at our parents or if they're not around, we need only to look in our hospitals and nursing homes. So do we need to have provision for healthcare? Y-E-S! If we forget Costa Rica and the Netherlands for a moment, what are we looking at. Health insurance for a family of two costs 10,000 per year for a 2,500 deductable. Let us assume that each year you meet your deductable. This means you spend 12,500 per year for health care. If you retire at age 55, you need 125,000 to cover healthcare to age 65. If you reach 65, you are not home free because if you have a chronic illness you will have co-pays and medications. I have seen hard working men and women retires loose their farms and homes to cover medical costs and what is terrible is that they still could not cover the expense. This country has the best medical care and the most accessible medical care if you are working or have money. If you do not meet these requirements things get sketchy.
