Re the employee/contractor business, several years ago my daughter worked a few hours a week at a private school, helping them do testing of new students. She received a 1099-MISC, even though it seemed by all the usual criteria that she was an employee and should have received a W-2 (and had taxes, FICA, etc. withheld). I had a lengthy discussion with a lady at the IRS about this. She too thought my daughter was more likely an employee than an independent contractor, and said there was some sort of ajudication process to sort it all out. Of course, the process would be somewhat adversarial in nature - if my daughter was in fact an employee, the school would have to cough up the missing federal payments. We decided not to pursue it, since daughter wanted to stay on good terms with school. So she paid SE taxes out of earnings, and said that she would get her status straightened out first if she worked for the school again. So there is a way to contest this - but be advised that you may be sort of burning bridges behind you...
