Reagan was like a veteran quarterback who comes up to the line of scrimmage, takes a glance at how the other team is deployed against him, and knows automatically what he needs to do. There is not enough time to figure it out from scratch, while waiting for the ball to be snapped. You have to have figured out such things long before the game began, and now just need to execute.

Very few Republican candidates for any office today show any sign of such in-depth preparation on issues.

While Reagan was better grounded and better prepared than Romney politically, Romney was a better businessperson than anyone who has ever run for President, and that's what this country needs, whether or not the electorate sees that we are Greece in 10 years.

The main advantage that Reagan had relative to Romney, if we are going to use the quarterback analogy, is that while in Reagan's time, the media referees would throw more penalty flags against Reagan, the media today is on the field tripping the players on Romney's team. It's hard for anyone to win under those conditions.
