Irresistible Grace
When the Holy Spirit comes to make someone a new creature in Christ, no one can prevent or resist that work. Jesus promised that "all that the Father gives me will come to me" (John 6:37). He said moreover to Nicodemus, "The wind blows wherever it pleases....So it is with everyone born of the Spirit" (John 3:8, emphasis added in the above quotations).
Being born of the spirit is no different from being born of the flesh. We had nothing to do with our own birth. It was all done by something outside of ourselves. So it is with being "born again" spiritually - God does all the work from beginning to end.
Cummings continues:
If anyone can resist the Spirit of God, he is stronger than God. God is no longer God; man is supreme. The only way a person who is naturally hostile to God and dead in sin will ever come to Christ is through God himself taking the initiative to work in his heart to draw him. All are invited to come to Christ. No one who comes will be turned away. But when you come to Christ, don't pat yourself on the back - rather, praise the sovereign God who brought you to himself. (John 6:44, 37).
