The Reformed Churches consider themselves as "confessing" churches. What does this mean?

Cummings writes:

What does it really mean to be a Christian? What is involved in making a public confession of faith in Christ as Savior and Lord and uniting with his church?....

Your relationship to Jesus Christ is the most important question of all. Eternal salvation depends on [receiving] and confessing Christ. The apostle Paul wrote: "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved" (Romans 10:9, 10). Christ said, "Therefore whoever confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies me before men, him will I deny also before my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32,33 - NKJV).

But what does it mean to confess Christ? What is involved in confessing faith in Christ publicly? ...The goal is that you will make a good confession of faith in Christ to the glory of God and your eternal happiness.
