Rider in my opinion there are more than one reason for 'backups' - although most people tend to say/act that a backup is a backup.

First to address your question - I use SuperDuper to make bootable backups. The software costs $30. There is another alternative for bootable backups named CarbonCopy Clone or CCC if memory serves me right.

In my view there are two major uses for SupderDuper backups. First is it a fast way to recover a single file or folder. Just double click on the drive's icon, drill down (file structure is identical to your HDD) and copy what you want.

Superduper (or any bootable clone) is way to have access to your PC in the event your HDD files. You can press certain key and boot from your SuperDuper clone and use it on your PC just like the normal HDD - it will be slower - but it works.

It is not possible as far as I know to boot from TimeMachine even though TM can totally restore your HDD with the exception of Trash and cache files.

Recently I got a new notebook and I used my SuperDuper backup as the source for moving files to the new machine - TM can do this, but with TM you cannot pick and choose which files/folders - it is all or nothing. Being a control freak, I like the ability to pick and choose.

I also use TM mostly because it provides versioning. It is common for me you retrieve a previously deleted email for example - something that you cannot do with a bootable drive generally speaking.

I keep both SuperDuper and TM backup in different Voyager dock with different bare HDDs. In addition, in my view an off site backup is important, so on a weekly basis I rotate SuperDuper backups offsite. So even if my house were destroyed, worse case I have lost a week's worth of data/updates.

I have found Amazon to be an excellent place for bare drives and Voyager docks.
