Right in the middle of the Boob Woodward interview, my local CBS affiliate breaks in with severe weather reporting.
You didn't miss much.
Just that President Bush probably violated the Constitution by shifting funds from the war in Afghanistan to building infrastructure in Kuwait (pipelines, supply depots, etc.) for a war in Iraq that Congress didn't know was coming...
That the President told the Ambassador from Saudi Arabia about the war plan before he told Colin Powell and some other advisors, and that he let the Ambassador see maps and plans which were specifically marked "Top Secret - No Foreign"...
That Tommy Franks lied when he was asked in a Press Conference what it would take to invade Iraq, and said "I don't know, the President hasn't asked me about that..."
That Dick Cheney and Colin Powell aren't speaking....
That in a meeting with the CIA the President told them "This isn't enough to convince Joe Public" and that George Tenet said "Don't worry, it's a slam dunk..."
That the CIA hired a bunch of Muslim leaders, and that's where the initial intelligence came to attack him before Tommy Franks had planned to start the war. Some reports say Saddam was injured, but most don't....
That President Bush was "on the record", but that many of Woodward's other 75 sources were not. CBS insisted on listening to the tapes of the interviews with the un-named sources for verification, but also didn't name them, per agreement.
That President Bush said he didn't ask his father for advice because "He's the wrong father. There's a higher Father to ask..."
That five days after 9/11 Bush told Condi Rice that they had to go to Afghanistan first, but that he was determined to take out Saddam Hussein as well. 72 days after 9/11, he pulled Rumsfeld aside and told him to get plans, and to keep it secret...
That Colin Powell told colleagues that Dick Cheney "has a fever, an absolute fever. It's almost as though nothing else [except invading Iraq] exists"...
That on August 16, 2002, the President was saying Saddam "desires" Weapons of Mass Destruction, but 10 days later VP Cheney made his famous "There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has Weapons of Mass Destruction" speech...
That Powell, when belated told of the plan for war, said "in a chilly way" "Are you aware of the consequences?" and gave the Pottery Barn Speech, i.e. "You break it, you own it."...
That almost all of Powell's predictions have come true, and almost none of Cheney's have, at least so far....
That the Ambassador from Saudi Arabia didn't believe Cheney when told of the invasion plans, even after seeing the "Top Secret" map, and that he needed to be told by the President himself. Who obliged two days later.
That the Minister from Saudi Arabia assured the Bush family that his country would being pumping oil over their quota in the months leading up to the Presidential election in 2004 to assure that the US economy was doing well...
That nearly everyone in the inner circle, including Condi Rice and Karen Hughes (as well as Cheney, Rumsfeld, Tenet and others) supported going to war...
That Bush had taken it upon himself to "liberate people", and that whether there were Weapons of Mass Destruction was not really that important...
That when asked about the verdict of history, the President said "It doesn't matter. We'll all be dead."
So, you can see, you didn't miss much. Anyway, you can probably get a good recap if you tune to Fox News. I'm sure they'll give an accurate account of the story, too.
