Roosters are only needed for fertilized eggs.

I'm "just" a city girl, but I was wondering. Does the rooster just squat over the eggs (they must have a soft shell at some point?) and squirt a little fertilizer? Come on, now, I'm being serious here. How come there are so many jokes about roosters chasing the hens in the barnyard if they aren't needed for egg production? I thought all eggs were fertilized.
