Connection Affiliate SkyWest Posts Strong Traffic Gains

SkyWest Airlines posted huge traffic gains for December and 2001, rivaling the performance of its fellow independent and Delta Connection carrier, Atlantic Coast Airlines.

Passengers for the St. George, Utah-based carrier increased 28.6% in December to 581,392. Revenue passenger miles, the measure that takes distance into account, rose 84.4% to 197.8 million. The big difference between passengers and RPMs can be accounted for by SkyWest's route structure, which is based on long-haul flying between widely separated major cities in western U.S. For the year, SkyWest's passengers were up 11.3% to 6.2 million.

Capacity was up 59% in December, in part due to a growing partnership with Delta to increase SkyWest's fleet of regional jets.

Atlantic Coast (ACA), based at Washington Dulles International Airport, last week reported a 74.1% increase in RPMs and a 42% increase in passengers to 473,499 for December. Its passengers in 2001 grew 30.6% to 4.9 million.

Both SkyWest and Atlantic Coast are affiliated with United Airlines.

Traffic reports for other regional airlines have been mixed. Great Lakes Aviation, a hub feeder for United and Frontier airlines, reported traffic dropping by half in December and a quarter for the year. Great Lakes pulled down capacity by 31% in December, anticipating lower demand.

American Eagle, a subsidiary of American Airlines, reported December RPMs up 3.8%. American Eagle moved one million passengers in December, a 5.7% drop from year-earlier levels. December traffic was off 10% for Horizon, an Alaska Airlines subsidiary, while Continental Express' traffic was up 11.3%.
