It's ironic that I should post on saving UAL. I covered a UAL short on September 10.

First, reduce expenses.

All non-union employees(executives) will be paid union wage. If you can't make a profit, you don't deserve the big bucks.

All executive stock options must be executed immediately, or cancelled.

In-flight meal service is suspended. It's mostly rubbish anyway. On long flights, pass out sandwiches. The quality is likely better anyway. Lufthansa does this on inter-Europe flights.

Beverage service is limited to three choices: beer, Coke, or water. The airline won't carry dead inventory. Royal Nepal Airways does this.

Any cut in employee pay should be compensated with stock. If you own part of the company, you have a vested interest in it's success.

Second, attract customers.

Service must improve. Employees should all wear a name badge with a short employee number - "LAX-12". If you're treated poorly, you should be able to report it. Pay should be cut for all complaints, and increased for all positive calls(few though they be).

Buy a bucket of paint! United is silver, right? I'm not sure. Make that 747 a Coke ad(revenue?). Why can't they make "sponsored" flights to Orlando or wherever? Disney is hurting for coin as well. Put Goofy on the side of the plane. JAL does this.

Give out "Adventure Tickets" to anyone who has flown United in the past year. These are unknown destination tickets based on seat availability. You come to the airport not knowing where you'll be, could be Maui, could be Cancun. The airline can simply fill empty seats, but the traveler feels they got a great deal.

Salvation is not impossible. It just requires some thought.
