Say I purchased 100 shares each at $10 for a total of $1000 in January, 2000. I sell 20 shares each at $8 for a total of $160 in March, 2000. Do I have a (short-term) capital loss? If so, how much? It sounds like you're not paying any commission. From what tou say, I figure your short-term capital loss to be $40 [$2 a share, 20 shares].
