Schwab suggested that I buy Quicken and input the last 3 years worth of data (what a chore) and then start downloading from their website. Is that the best route? What do others do?

Yep, that's the best way.
Bite the bullet and do it.

You may be able to download future Vanguard transactions to. Schwab for sure. And the first time you download, it will go back "X" amount of time and download some historical transactions, which you can verify and save the typing time.
