Scott Glenn played Jodie Foster's FBI boss in the movie...

"After working with John Douglas for some time Scott Glenn thanked him and said how fascinating it was to have been allowed into his world. Douglas laughed at this comment and told Glenn that if he really wanted to get into his world, he should listen to an audio tape of serial killers Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris torturing, raping and murdering two teenage girls. Glenn listened to less than one minute of the tape, and has since said that he feels he lost a sense of innocence in doing so and that he has never been able to forget what he heard..."

In John Douglas's book "Mind Hunter" (http://www.amazon.com/Mindhunter-1st-first-Text-Only/dp/B004...), he describes the personal toll it takes on the investigators. He says his divorce was a direct result of the desensitization. One example he gave, upon coming home and hearing that his daughter broker her arm, he replied "okay, but she's okay, right?" as in, anything short of rape, torture and murder just didn't move the needle, and so he lost all ability to empathize and share in what his family was going through.

I can't even imagine.
