Screws, unless specific types would need to have shear strength, normal drywall screws are not good for siding, structural use.. they are brittle, will not bend, give.. The new setup looks great, has a bit of both worlds, ductility, holding power...

Ringshanks are painful for remodeling, I imagine these hurricane nails will be worse in that respect, but, they can be cut.. I used a ton of SS Robertson head deck screws on my new deck, I pity the guys that ever replace it.. Hope it's not me!

Year ago someone gave me all the timbers I wanted from a huge pile of pallets for some heavy machinery.. Came from Germany.. One of the tech laughed as I fought the 6" twisted, glue coated spikes, some even longer.. "German Nails and Canadian Pine" he told me.. The bolts were OK, those long air driven spikes were tough.. Made one hell of a racket as they came out.. Some nice clear pine made a couple great workbenches, a heavy stand for my wood lathe, pretty stuff..
