SeattlePioneer saysMy nephew graduated from Reed this spring. I understand the usual degree is in sex, Marx and marijuana....No no no. The T-shirt (I have a couple of them) says "Communism, Atheism, Free Love." This motto goes back a few decades in the student culture, and the T-shirt design is owned by the Student Body organization. At this year's reunion, I heard the (outgoing) President of the college informally admit that that is the real motto of the College.A little while ago a younger graduate asked me what made Reed so interesting in the 60's. I replied, "Communists." She seemed to think I was joking. I told that story to some of my classmates and they all chuckled and nodded knowingly.I also have a recent version of the T-shirt that says "Communism, Atheism, Free Love" on the front and "Capitalism, Piety, Chastity" on the back. It always gets a laugh.
