Seriously? Did he know that he would have gotten severance pay and unemployment pay and chose to quit anyway, or did he find out about the severance after the fact of his leaving?

My husband knew that the department was either going to disband or that people would be offered jobs in another state OR in another department that was notorious for letting people go after they had been there for a year. He might not have been offered anything to stay on.
The stress was making him sick.
This man worked 50+ years and there was NO way I was going to get on his case about having to jump ship to save his sanity.
My husband took his SS a bit early and I had taken mine a few years ago.
We left NY City and retired to a small town on the New England coast.
We have never looked back. We own our own house again and our mortgage is $2200 a month less than it was in our tony Brooklyn neighborhood.
We bought a car and can now take advantage of places like Costco and local supermarkets where the cost of food is 40-50% lower than in our old neighborhood.
We are both happy to be here, close to family again for the first time in many years.
The workplace is not your friend, for the most part and neither are the people you work with. If you knew what the environment was in some of the "Wall Street" firms you would know that sometimes you just have to quit. I am glad it all worked out for us.
