Seriously there is simply no reason to stop any situation from being called marriage. Why is marriage between 2 people? Stop right at that one. What is magic about 2? You can not use tradition, it is about people in love being able to share that love. OK, then pick any situation you desire between people and what criteria do you use to negate them from being married? No, well it is common sense. No because it was always ..... Why?IMO, we need a new social contract that separates this stuff from financial concerns. I agree gays should have the right to marry as much as non-gays, however I need a why as to excluding others, just because it is not my choice of relationship. I can not come up with any reason other than financial. If financial is the criteria then I need to know why it is being extended to gay couples and not to others. And I have a proposal that will simplify these arguments a lot. Not resolve them, but simplify them.Just have government stop issuing "marriage licenses". And stop treating "married" couples differently.Any of the legal baggage that we actually want to keep, gets moved over to the LEGAL institution of "civil unions" (feel free to invent a better term) - which, as a matter of law, have absolutely no relationship to the RELIGIOUS institution of "marriage".Churches, country clubs, fast-food-restaurant cooks, or anyone else who is so inclined can "marry" any couple or other group they like - or refuse to do so for whatever reason or no reason at all - and the government won't care in the least, because it will have no legal effect whatsoever.
