(Seriously, why do so many people think debt has a P? Is there a real reason?)

Maybe it is because the B is silent. People know there is an extra letter in there and forget which one to use, and p's look like b's.

I think a lot of spelling problems occur because of the poor correlation between written and spoken English. Look at the word "grammar". Actually, listen to it first, and think about how it should be spelled based on the sound. How would you think "debt" was spelled if you had never seen it written?

Of course, this is no excuse for not being able to remember how to spell a four-letter word. At least some of the letters are used in the pronunciation. Try writing in Chinese.
