SETI turns ET web search to 'promising radio signals'
The world's largest distributed computing protect, the internet-based SETI@home search for extra-terrestrial life, is to take a closer look at some of the most promising radio signals so far collected in the hunt for alien life.
For nearly four years, the SETI@home receiver atop the giant Arecibo radio telescope has been surveying the skies in search of an alien signal as millions around the world have been processing the raw data on their PCs and sending back the results via the web.
For eight hours each day from March 18-20, SETI@home scientists will have the full use of the Puerto Rico-stationed Arecibo radio telescope and will use it to target between 100 and 200 locations where the strongest, clearest and most promising candidate signals have previously been detected.
Only a candidate signal that has been revisited and confirmed in this manner can be considered to be a potential intelligent transmission from the stars.
