She insists on hand washing all the dishes in cold water with very little soap...

Sometimes mine does that too. But she does regard me as head of household (a cultural thing, mostly), and knows I want them in the dishwasher. Sometimes I can see she washed something, and I'll just put it in the dishwasher anyway.

It's a huge peeve of mine. Maybe I'm a bit overboard, but I got really (really!) sick once from dirty dishes (at least that's what the doctor said)**. So now I want everything that can go in the dishwasher to go in the dishwasher. And I use the "sani rinse" feature, which uses really hot water during the final rinse. (As in I-can't-touch-the-plates hot.)

And I use straws with all drinking glasses outside our home. Though I don't bring my own utensils when I eat outside my home (though I probably should).

**I could feel the fever wash over me like a wave. It would wake me up. I'd take Tylenol, and after a time it would recede like the tide only to come back a few hours later and wake me up again. Another Tylenol...etc. It really sucked.
