She is paying on a car loan in her name and she is paying rent. That IS establishing good credit history. It takes time. Here is the problem. The lease agreement is under someone else's name, but my sister makes the payments, and pays the utilities. We would like to have the lease transferred to her name, eventually, and I was trying to come up with some way to make her credit history look better so that she could pass the credit check. I'm not sure I believe what I am being told, but I live too far way to really investigate on my own.She would like to move but she tells me she can't get a new lease because of her bad credit. I have not rented in almost 20 years, so I am unfamiliar with current practices. Does it cost money to apply for apartment rental - ie do you have pay for the credit check? I told my sister to just go out and apply for a new lease, but she says her credit is not good enough. I would think 1+ years of paying on a car should suffice for apartment renting, it's not like she is buying a house or something ...Moving to another locaton would help her to save money, and this money could then be put into a savings/ira account ...
