...should an oppressive minority's subjective interpretations interfere with business opportunities?

Well, I would prefer it if Disney policed themselves in this regard. I think they should've avoided the flesh parade not just because it would generate controversy, but also because THEY CAN DO BETTER.

Don't you expect more from your Company, Stevexy? I know *I* do. Putting a show like that on TV comes across to me as an act of desperation. Can't get your ratings up through top-quality, creative programming? Then show some skin!

Should we cave due to the missives received by the FTC?

How about missives received FROM the FTC? As I recall, the Chairman of the FTC questioned the appropriateness of the program. It may turn out in the end that Disney violated some rules. And frankly, I think we've made a mistake if there's ever even the slightest bit of doubt that our programming might violate FTC rules. We just don't need that kind of publicity.

Should ALIAS be cancelled?

No, but it shouldn't be shown on ABC Family. Nor should the J Lo concert. Nor "Whose Line Is It, Anyway." The "Family" part of the "ABC Family" name is a joke. I enjoy "Whose Line", but I surely wouldn't sit around watching it with my kids--the humor is very much aimed at adults.

But Disney and Viacom are two publicly-traded, large media companies. They both have to invite sexually-themed programming into their portfolios for purposes of growing market cap.

You're comparing Apples to Oranges. What's Viacom's mission statement? It it "to be the world's premier family entertainment company" like Disney's? No.

And besides... What's wrong with Disney trying to differentiate itself from other media companies? Isn't this precisely what we SHOULD be doing?

...should Hooters pass up its value-creation opportunity based on such a concern, especially when empirical evidence suggests the venues can co-exist with all the negative publicity?

Geez, Stevexy... You can say that of MANY business ventures. Replace "Hooters" with "Penthouse" or "Jack Daniels." Does this mean that Disney should start producing porn and liquor if they can make a buck off of it?
