I think I might need to find a manual though as there are buttons I haven't figured out yet.

If you right-click the game in your library, there might be a "View player manual" option if the re-masterers included it. I've found that most older games that would have originally shipped with hardcopy manuals have the PDF provided on Steam.

GoG.com (good old games) ... Don't get me wrong, I love Steam and have quite a library there, but given the choice, I'd much rather have the DRM-free version of any game.

Completely agreed - and a lot of times they'll include extra bits like concept art, game guides, maps, manuals, etc.
