So how far would you take it? Suppose you're walking down the street and see a front door open and water flowing out. You look in and see that the sink is clogged and the water is on. Do you go in and turn off the sink? (obviously that would be tresspassing, but is it okay since you think you're doing the owner a favor?)

Just yell, "Is anyone home?" a few times, ring the doorbell, knock on the door. If you get no response, you know something is amiss. Call the police and ask them if you should shut it off. Just walking by is unconscionable.
