So I don't use any of the features a security suite provides except the firewall

I loved DOS and a command line OS.

Charlie, it sounds like you are the perfect candidate for OSX. It is Unix under the hood and you can do almost anything you want on the command line, but the GUI is there for all the usual office and media apps. It comes with a great firewall and is, overall, very secure. The only security I use is the OSX firewall and I have never had a problem. The downside is you have to buy new hardware.
