So... if my own child is a victim of bullying, should I encourage him to just smack the bully? Is that bad parenting, or common sense?

Take the child to Tae Kwon Do karate classes. This child will be taught to respect others, not to attack but to defend, and self confidence comes with the lessons. Bullies seem to attack those they deem to be weak.
