So I'm looking for suggestions of a better product, but still reasonably priced.

Something with no grains and that the package says "Made in the USA." Not "Distributed by X company @ X US address." Nothing goes in our dog's mouth that doesn't say "Made in the USA." And, even then, it can be risky, but at least we haven't had anymore costly three-day stints on IV fluids. We get a product called "Blue" at the feed store and also buy the 365 brand at Whole Foods.

Table food is a controversial topic, but I've had vets in three states tell me it's not good for domesticated dogs to live on table scraps/"people food." Something to do with messing up their pancreas. Wild animals, of course, scavenge, but their lifespan is shorter than domesticated dogs. YMMV.
