DW is several years older than I am, and she's already receiving social security based on her own employment record. I'm not receiving SS, but when I do, I understand that DW will be entitled to payments equaling 1/2 the amount that I am entitled to. (This is more than the amount she currently receives.)

BUT -- and here's my question -- could she even now receive 1/2 the amount that I would qualify for if (hypothetically) I were to begin receiving SS? That is, could she now receive half of what I would be able to receive even though I'm not actually receiving any payments yet? (Or do we need to wait until I actually begin to receive SS?)
