Apparently not.

US is 16 on the list of best places to be born. Look at all of those socialist heck holes that are ahead of our American Exceptionalism.

You obviously didn't read the article to which you linked.

It didn't extoll socialism and countries like Switzerland, Hong Kong and Singapore are a lot more capitalist than socialist.

1. Switzerland
2. Australia
3. Norway
4. Sweden
5. Denmark
6. Singapore
7. New Zealand
8. Netherlands
9. Canada
10. Hong Kong

Furthermore, NONE of these countries create their wealth through socialism. They all create their wealth through capitalism, and then some of them steal income through discriminatory taxation in order to give it to those deemed to be politically deserving. They have been wise enough to follow those policies moderately, and have avoided killing off the goose that lays those golden eggs.

Furthermore, pretty much NONE of those countries would be having much wealth, security or success without the security system and economic system created by the United States around the world which has enabled many countries to create wealth for their citizens that would be inconceivable for pre WWII generations.

We really don't even need to mention the countries that tried to develop wealth through socialism, such as the USSR and all the nations of the east block, China, North Korea, Cuba and so on. Of course China was an economic failure that butchered it's population by the millions until the goal of creating wealth through socialism was abandoned. After that, it has done a lot better.

Of course the Brits and their empire began the modern capitalist system and system of world trade. Earlier there were the Dutch, Venice, and other examples of such policies leading to similar results. The United States took over that responsibility when British resources failed and extended it on a scale the world has never seen before.

I would therefore conclude that crediting socialism for the good fortune of these ten countries is ludicrous.

The credit goes to the capitalist system and the system of world trade developed by the Brits and extended to the world by the United States, and the system of security provided by United State diplomacy, the US Army, Navy, Marine Corp, CIA and other such institutions.

This includes institutions such as the European Common market, which the United States helped create and has supported, although of course the Europeans deserve much of the credit for making that work ----so far.

In short, your gloat is vastly misplaced.

SeattlePioneer writes,

It's interesting that Singapore is so capitalist that they realized they needed a single-payer health care system to control costs. They now spend 4% of GDP on health care vs. 17% for the US -- and they get better outcomes.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/mitt-on-the-menu/2012...

As can never be said often enough, we spend 17?percent of our gross domestic product on health care while most nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development spend around 11?percent with similar outcomes (and mighty Singapore spends just 4?percent). The political problem, of course, is that every dollar of health-care “waste” is someone’s dollar of income. To reframe the debate, we need an authoritative analysis that identifies exactly what’s driving our costs so much higher than everyone else’s — as well as a set of lessons we can learn from the nations that do more (including insure everyone) with much less.

I don't have much hope of seeing Tea-Baggers or Chickenhawks do the same kind of data-driven analysis.

Obamacare in crisis as 2013 approaches
http://www.humanevents.com/2012/11/26/obamacare-in-crisis-as......

Two weeks ago, I tallied up the score in the state rebellion against Obamacare. About half of the states have either forthrightly refused to set up their ObamaCare insurance exchanges, or opted for a state/federal “partnership” arrangement. Most of the 16 outright refusals have come from Republican governors, who generally cite three reasons for insisting that the federal government run its own Obamacare exchanges in their states:

1. The governors don’t want to get saddled with the expense of setting up and running those exchanges.

2. The states feel that they would be very junior partners in the Obamacare enterprise, without much in the way of local control, so the whole concept of a “state-run” exchange is really just a fig leaf of federalism for a monstrous central bureaucracy.

3. Perhaps the most damning indictment offered by the recalcitrant governors is that Obamacare’s regulations are still largely unwritten. The governors felt they were being asked to sign a contract that still contained a shocking number of blank pages and penciled-in notes.

What's millions of suffering and dead poor and unemployed families compared to tax cuts for a few thousand rich families! If DH and I had to throw ourselves on the tender mercies of private insurers today, at age 63, I bet we'd be paying at least half our income just for health insurance--and we're better off than most Americans.

(Srsly, I think universal single-payer or at least single-payer catastrophic insurance is the right answer, but this is as close as we can get with today's conservatives & libertarians.)

I wasn't gloating. I was just pointing out that countries tea baggers and neocons point out as being socialist he!! holes actually have a better quality of life in than in the US. Having been to Denmark and Sweden a few times, it was obvious that that was true. Heck, even Canada now has a higher per capita net worth than the US.

Obviously you agree that the US should adopt some of the policies of northern Europe; universal health care, longer vacations, heavily regulated capitalism, etc to improve the quality of life in the US as well.

If, as you say, the credit goes to US defense spending, then we are idiots. But now that foreign countries can donate heavily and anonymously in US elections, it seems as if they will be able to vote themselves continued US support, much to the detriment of the general population of the US.

Not necessarily socialism; rather, having a functional society and government.

Next to nothing has been 'invented' nor developed or implemented in nearly all of that wonderful list of 'socialized countries'.

computers? Ha....the first 'portable' ,the Kaypro came out of Europe, but they were literally left in the dust with the PC revolution. They tried to manufacture, but that was a gigantic disaster.

They had a big telecom industry...it is quickly dying as the Chinese beat them on innovation, technology, new plants to make it, a more educated workforce, and capitalism. Ericsson, NOkia....all going down the tubes.....

New cures for things? Sweden? Ha...Norway?? finland? denmark? GImme a break.....

If it weren't for things invented in the US....they'd be back in the stone ages......

Socialism doesn't advance society, unless you are talking about the Soviet machine that built enough chemical warfare - antrax - plants to kill everyone on the planet 10 times over....build enough nukes to do the same.....killed at least 10 people trying to put a man in orbit and get him back....but heck...the people were starving...but the money went where the 'elites' decided to put it. Everyone else was 'equal' but in horrendous poverty....

Same for Cuba...don't get sick and need to go to the hospital. you'll need to bring your own bandages and needles and maybe even medicines...since the hospital folks don't have enough..and your relatives better bring food.....to feed you....

"Next to nothing has been invented nor developed or implemented in...those wonderful socialized countries"

Telegraph at his stupid jingoistic best.

Just 5 minutes please...

From my little hometown in New Zealand Lord Rutherford of Nelson split the atom and made major discoveries in radioactive and nuclear physics helping to shape modern science...

My great uncle, later a Swiss resident, invented automobile aerodynamics ( stream lining) that American automobile manufacturers used..after Ford's boxy invention.

Sneering at Sweden, Tele? You mentioned new cures for things and said "gimme a break.."

I won a national travel scholarship to Sweden ( from the UK) and know that country has a lot to be proud of..

the safety match
dynamite
echocardiography/sonograms ( of course your heart is stone...you won't need that)
digitizer ( pre-mouse)
pacemaker (Nahhh nothing that was ever medically useful, right?)
gamma knife for brain surgery ( you need some of that)
3 point safety belt ( don't bother to use it)
Tetrapak
rayon,cellophane, velcro

I haven't checked any other inventions because in your grandiose way you will tell everyone only the USA can invent stuff. And bigger is better...

what you posted in the way of inventions are long before those countries became Nanny States.

The percent of innovations and real ideas has gone to near zero in those socialist paradises.

Now, it is China and India leading the world in patent filings.

Sweden 'had' an aircraft industry. It had an auto industry but other than its home captive market, is flailing worldwide. It had a telecom industry, along with Finland but it's in total meltdown, and most of their manufacturing has moved offshore.....so their in country base is slowly slipping away.....

Yeah...the Scandanavians invented 'texting' (short message service).....but is now being usurped by Twitter and Facebook.....

The Euros are constrained so badly by 'standards'......they only do things in 'lockstep'....which is why their computer industry died on the vine, waiting for governments to come up with standards....for the PC...can you imagine what PCs would look like if designed by a US government committee? What a joke it would be......probably still run on COBOL and FORTRAN, with some ADA rammed down your throats......

Did Facebook wait for 'standards'? Hardly.....or MySpace - which has come and gone just as fast? What follows after FAcebook? Google what? and for how long?

Sorry, europe is going to be left in the dust. Especially old Europe. Innovation is being taxed out of the socialist countries. Why invent things when the government will take 90% of what you earn in taxes? Or invent it, and make it elsewhere......generating zero jobs in your home country.

Let's look WHEN these happened!

safety match:

"Two French chemists, Henri Savene and Emile David Cahen, developed a safe match using phosphorus sesquisulfide that was patented in 1898. They proved that the substance was not poisonous, that it could be used in a "strike-anywhere" match, and that the match heads were not explosive.[22] They patented a safety match composition in 1898 based on phosphorus sesquisulfide and potassium chlorate"

The dangers of white phosphorus in the manufacture of matches led to the development of the "hygienic" or safety match. The major innovation in its development was the use of red phosphorus, not on the head of the match but instead on a specially designed striking surface. The idea was developed in 1844 by the Swede Gustaf Erik Pasch (1788–1862) and was improved by Johan Edvard Lundström (1815–1888).

====

Wow...that's 170 years ago!...LOL!...if you think that Sweden had universal health care in 1860, raise your hand!...or even the equivalent of state pensions, raise your hand!

---------------------------------------

dynamite

"Swedish industrialist, engineer, and inventor, Alfred Nobel built bridges and buildings in Stockholm. His construction work inspired Nobel to research new methods of blasting rock. In 1860, the inventor first started experimenting with nitroglycerine."

Wow...again, ROLF....did Sweden really have universal health care? What was that, free leeches for blood letting?

--------------------------------------------

Sonograms?

"Two researchers are noted in the history of ultrasound and medical imaging. They are: Doctor Karl Theodore Dussik of Austria, who published the first paper on medical ultrasonics in 1942, based on his research on transmission ultrasound investigation of the brain; and Professor Ian Donald of Scotland, who developed practical technology and applications for ultrasound in the 1950s."

http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blultrasound.ht...

Somehow you think Sweden did it?

guess again

-----------------------------------------

Pacemaker?

"Canadian, John Hopps invented the first cardiac pacemaker. Hopps was trained as an electrical engineer at the University of Manitoba and joined the National Research Council in 1941, where he conducted research on hypothermia. While experimenting with radio frequency heating to restore body temperature, Hopps made an unexpected discovery: if a heart stopped beating due to cooling, it could be started again by artificial stimulation using mechanical or electric means. This lead to Hopps' invention of the world's first cardiac pacemaker in 1950. His device was far too large to be implanted inside of the human body. It was an external pacemaker. (Source http://www.nrc.ca)"

wow..again, you are blowing liberal socialist smoke...

I just checked the first few and you were wrong 100% of the time. Either they were invented long before modern medicine and the Nanny State...like 150 years ago.....or in other countries..

Let's see..the auto industry moved to 'streamlining' back in the 1930s...with the 'teardrop' type design to reduce drag.

Did we have Medicare then? Nope. Did we have SS back then? barely....and that was here. How about Europe? Nope......they didn't have a Nanny state either!.....

I suspect 'streamlining' came more out of the aviation industry which was then moving to metal airplanes...... and it was sold more as a marketing tool that increasing gas mileage.

So far, you have failed miserably to show that CURRENT socialist countries actually innovate much compared to highly capitalistic countries like the US.

--------------

Going down your list - Rayon

19th-century manufacturers sought an artificial material with similar qualities as silk. The first fabric deemed suitable for the task was rayon, which in fact was originally known as “artificial silk.” In its more than 110 years in existence, rayon has gone on to make a statement on fashion runways, highways and operating tables.

----

wow....110 years ago. I suppose you imagine your socialist countries had universal health care (free leeches) back then? no charge for blood letting?

A swiss guy perfected the process and it was made by a French firm......over 100 years ago!.......when France was actually a capitalist country. Not a nanny state.

so far, you are batting ZERO.

Want to try again?

Sweden...1990s Losec
2003 (with Estonia) Skype..bought by Microsoft 2011
Australia off hand...
CPAP mask
Polymer banknote
Bionic Ear
Quantum Bit
Radar system to detect stealth aircraft or missiles
Spray on skin ( still in testing) for major burns
Blackbox flight recorder...

I haven't looked into England...no doubt a nanny state in your eyes but still home of a few inventions..

FYI DH works daily with CEOs of start-ups in Silicon Valley and I myself wrote a paper on the beginning of LAN (written in 1983-4) Those were exciting times.

I don't disparage anything here...it is a hot bed of innovation.

But your arrogance about countries you have probably never lived in or had contact with irritates me.

Keep downgrading other countries' achievements, blaming it on the political systems etc

Tell us again that Obama and his socialism will kill the Boston High tech area as well as Silicon Valley. We obviously need to hear it.

Just don't get really major burns from an oil explosion and require Spray on Skin....

You have done an admirable job of handing the troll his head on a platter. I've told you before how much I appreciate your well-reasoned comments and civility.

Now it is time to click the frowny face because he is, like so many trolls around here, only here to disrupt and "stir the pot." He isn't here for conversation or dialogue.

G'head. Click the frowny button. You'll be much happier not being exposed to the prejudice.

Heh heh...his 3.8% tax on gross receipts is doing that right now as high tech biotech companies are cutting back massively..staff and projects....so they stay profitable. that's 20% or more of their profits he wants..to fund his Obamakare for the weenies and queenies.

Wasn't it Xerox or and IBM that put the 'token ring' LAN into actual production and use? Along with DEC....? not some socialist country that could get things into production......... and it was profs at NYU and Stanford who came up with most of the queuing theory..... used in LANs.....

Yes they were..but show me a Swedish computer company..or Danish or Finnish one......or even Swiss one.....

and most of what they invent is ways to get around their Nanny state regulations that make things 'too expensive'. regulated telecom services...so folks figure out 'cheap ways' to get around the high cost government services. Like SKYPE....instead of 50c a minute or dollar a minute toll charges by the state phone company. Here we had mCI that gave us 3c/minute long distance..... once again, you suffered under your Nanny state until someone figured out a way to outfox the government strangling services kept high and run inefficiently.

Your cellphone service is 3 to five times the cost..... in Europe.....so you had to invent SMS...to get around your tax and nanny state less expensively.....

Sorry..socialist countries lose out. Stay behind the technology curve for the most part.....

So, can we all be like Scandinavia?

Maybe not.

http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2132939

Abstract:
Because of their more limited inequality and more comprehensive social welfare systems, many perceive average welfare to be higher in Scandinavian societies than in the United States. Why then does the United States not adopt Scandinavian-style institutions? More generally, in an interdependent world, would we expect all countries to adopt the same institutions? To provide theoretical answers to this question, we develop a simple model of economic growth in a world in which all countries benefit and potentially contribute to advances in the world technology frontier. A greater gap of incomes between successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurs (thus greater inequality) increases entrepreneurial effort and hence a country’s contribution to the world technology frontier. We show that, under plausible assumptions, the world equilibrium is asymmetric: some countries will opt for a type of “cutthroat” capitalism that generates greater inequality and more innovation and will become the technology leaders, while others will free-ride on the cutthroat incentives of the leaders and choose a more cuddly form of capitalism. Paradoxically, those with cuddly reward structures, though poorer, may have higher welfare than cutthroat capitalists; but in the world equilibrium, it is not a best response for the cutthroat capitalists to switch to a more cuddly form of capitalism. We also show that domestic constraints from social democratic parties or unions may be beneficial for a country because they prevent cutthroat capitalism domestically, instead inducing other countries to play this role.

Curiosity, Intelligence and perseverence are not limited to Texas

But they may be limited IN Texas...

" Texas..."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Texas is a great place.
I've visited and worked there.
The people I've met are no different than anywhere else.

What is so wrong with folks having a different perspective than yours?

The intent of a republic is not that everyone has the same viewpoint or
policies at a state level.

I live here. It's not THAT bad, but there are certainly bits that are annoying.

What is so wrong with folks having a different perspective than yours?

My daughter has to attend school here.

-synchronicity, unless I get bribed to move elsewhere

Ummm. Sykesix gives cewll phones as an example of things invented in Europe that were actually invented in the USA, thus demonstrating the customary bias of American liberals against their own country:

In the United States, engineers from Bell Labs began work on a system to allow mobile users to place and receive telephone calls from automobiles, leading to the inauguration of mobile service on June 17, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri. Shortly after, AT&T offered Mobile Telephone Service.

Motorola and Bell Labs raced to be the first to produce a handheld mobile phone. That race ended on April 3, 1973 when Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs.[3][4] The prototype handheld phone used by Dr. Martin Cooper weighed 2.5 pounds and measured 9 inches long, 5 inches deep and 1.75 inches wide. The prototype offered a talk time of just 30 minutes and took 10 hours to re-charge.[5]
