Solar is a lot more viable than the oil execs would like you to think. Sales of photovoltaic cells will reach about $10 billion this year, and they double every two years. Project those numbers out 10 years or so, and they get huge.

Little new land area needs to be covered to generate a lot of solar electricity. Put solar cells on every rooftop, and they reduce the load on the power distribution system, generate a lot of electricity, and use no land that wasn't already being used.

This will be affordable soon enough. Economies of scale and new technologies are very close.
