According to at least one estimate, newly installed global solar photovoltaic capacity surpassed that of wind power in 2013, for the first time.

There were 36.5 gigawatts of PV installed, with record levels of installations in China, Japan and the U.S., compared with 35.5 GW of wind in 2013.

This, in part, came about from the US's production tax credit for wind power briefly expiring, crashing our wind power installation. That will change for 2014 and wind may again surpass solar, but with solar PV costs declining faster than wind, solar may well take the lead for good in coming years.
