Some people trust their religious and political leaders and other authority figures unquestioningly

And for some those authority figures are blog writers.

I ran into a lovely phrase recently which I wish I had had during some of the political confrontations .... confirmation bias, i.e., the tendency of people to believe things that confirm what they already believe and disbelieve things which go counter to those beliefs, despite the merits of the sources or the quality of the data. One symptom is to act as if something is proven by indisputable sources when one is not even expert enough in the area to really evaluate the alternative sources.
