Some time ago I talked to somebody at a research institute for air traffic control in europe and it seems the technitians there believe that the pilots are mostly there for making the passengers feel secure. The plane could fly on its own. Now if this is totally true or not is not so important but it might be something to look into. Could pilots for example press a button and let the computer take over with no possibility of getting back control?

Another thing might be if there could be finger print sensors or something on the controls to only let the registered pilots fly the plane at any time unless the ground releases this control.

Just thoughts.
