Hello everyone,My Mom was recently called Home. We were truly blessed to have had her with us for 95 years. I called the SSA today to report and stop her monthly SS retirement benefit. No problem. However, when I asked about the lump sum death benefit of $255 IIRC, the SSA informed me that only her spouse (my Dad is 20 years deceased) or any of her children under 18 years old are eligible ... with the exception of a child who became disabled before 22 years of age. All her siblings are over 55.Is this correct? Since both my Mom and Dad received SS benefits and worked and earned those benefits, it seems odd to me that only 1 death benefit (my Dad) is paid? Of course, we are talking about the Government so I guess it doesn't have to make common sense? (shrugs)Any replies are welcome.TIARichArizona
I Googled ss death benefit lump sum and came up with exactly the information you had. The spouse gets the $255 and if that spouse is deceased then the money goes to a child who is a minor.Apparently there are no exceptions. Spouse, minor child. that's it.

I'm very sorry for your loss. She must've been something special to make it to 95.The tiny SSA death benefit only going to a surviving spouse or minor child makes sense if you consider that it was originally enough to pay for the simplest burial without depriving the surviving household of food or rent. Adult children or other relatives are generally not dependents of the deceased.
I want to sincerely thank all of you for your kind words and research. Mom was a wonderful lady blessed with a heart of gold and a good friend to everyone she met.Sincerely,RichArizona
Rich, I want to offer my sincerest sympathies. Your mom, like mine, lived a long-full life. We need to celebrate her life and accomplishments (the children had bore and raised).Donna
Mom was a wonderful lady blessed with a heart of gold and a good friend to everyone she met.Rich,Sounds like you were both blessed. You with a great Mom and she with a great son.
I was told the same thing when my Dad died in 1991. Only my mother who died before he did or a dependent child could get the $255.
