We bought a Dell in January. It has MS XP on it, and we had about six months of trouble free use.

Lately, we've been having a couple of problems: pop ups from he!! - so severe that we often can't see the screen we're actually using, because there are as many as 20-30 popups loading.

A run.dll error. Not sure what it means.

A "debugging" option that comes up periodically.

We've tried various pop up options (google toolbar, a couple of freeware pop up eliminators - most of which seem to disable our internet access -- which I guess, technically means they're working (i.e. no pop ups)...

We have a broadband internet connection.

What I'd like to do is move off all the photos and other files that we need, and then just reformat and start from scratch.

What should I watch out for? Is it straightforward? Should I call Dell (I think we have support, but this seems like a do-it-yourself job).

Any tips?
