Steve - I have great expertise in Rhinegau /Pfalz / Nahe region, and know many of the winemakers there. But Ialso have great fondness for Mosel and some Ruwer and Saar wines. I was also at the Prowein convention in Dusseldorf in March (the largest collection of wine makers I have ever seen in the world) and tasted a lot of the German 2004s there and met some of my favorite wines' winemakers. I have also regularly received invites to local importer sponsored wine tastings when the wine makers come to town. (I also own two top quality vineyards in the Rhinegau).

The German Riesling 2004's are truly spectacular. They are, for the first time in several years, more in the classic style. (The climate in 2003 was so hot that it's virtually impossible to find a true Kabinett weight because of the 'weight' of the fruit). You will absolutely LOVE the Mosel wines, which are more perfumey and light than in other parts of the country. I would mostly confine yourselves to sweet Mosels (and perhaps especially ONLY sweet Ruwers and Saars) because the climate in those areas is pretty cold and austere, and the wines have more acid vs. fruit in that part of the country. On the other hand, if you like dry Rieslings, and if you don't mind high acidity, you will definitely get a unique taste - personally, I love it.

J.J. Prum is overall my favorite Mosel producer.
Very close by, and also great, is Dr. Loosen (with Ernie Loosen) and Johannes Selbech of Selbach-Oster. Selbach puts on an unbelievable tadting - like a lot of vineyards in the area, his soil changes every few hundred meters and the Riesling tastes amazingly different and with much different minerality depending on if the soil is shale or slate, for instance.
Von Volxem is very yummy, and I also like Karthauserhopf, which I'm thinking was involved in a scandal many years ago, but now makes super wine. Good luck! Report in, please! I'll be making my Mosel tasting trip next spring and expect to be in the wine cellars of these and other folks!
