wrote this profile back during the post-9/11 anthrax scare for The Sunday Telegraph. It's not easy trying to capture for British readers, to whom a bloke who reads the news on the telly is just that and no more, the scale of the network dinosaurs, but I did my best. Dan Rather was a beloved comic figure to me back then. The memo business changed that, but as the years go by I hope it's the old Dan - wrapped around a lamppost as the hurricane comes ashore and reading the intro to some soft-focus drivel about a new fat pill - that lingers fragrantly in the memory:
