Subscriptions and licensing will always make more money than a physical product. A billion people buying $1 songs each year is a lot more than 50 million people buying $79 upgrades to OS X. And yes, I know my numbers are off but that doesn't negate the point. Content rules and songs are refreshed continuously. Hardware ages but has to compete every time against all other hardware options and is refreshed only periodically. There's no way for the hardware in the longterm to compete. Longterm, iPod will keep Apple profitable long after it has reached saturation in the market.
