Greetings Fools,
I run a small, incorporated consulting firm. We are a C corporation. We have had the same accountant for about three years, but for various reasons are looking to move our business to another accounting firm.
Our current accountant charges us a monthly fee for business accounting services. We have not found a new firm yet, but anticipate interviewing a few next month and settling on one by the late Feb/early March. Therefore, we would like to break ties with the current guy this week, so we don't end up having to pay him for services next month that we don't plan to use.
Our 2001 corporate taxes have been filed, so I don't see a problem with our being without an accountant for a short while. I presume we don't need to file any corporate quarterly stuff until sometime in April. Business is also dead slow right now, so it seems like a good time to make the move, since the accountant doesn't have much to do for us these days anyway. :)
Are there any issues I should be aware of in making this transition? And what exactly happens -- is it like moving to a new dentist, where our current accountant sends over our records to the new firm? Also, can anyone direct me to a place online where I can read up on how to properly interview and select an accounting firm? We went with our accountant on a single recommendation, but we've been unhappy with them and I'd like to avoid making the same mistake twice. Thanks.
