I used to run the remedial PT program in the Navy, and then I would do my own PT. I also found doing math a good way to pass the time, the other thing I would do is cadence calls, usually only in my head. The cadence call has a natual rythm, and helps to keep the pace. I would also vary the run each time. I had about 10 or 15 differnent runs I could do, some longer, some steeper. The interconnected at points the the variation was good not to see the same thing each data. It also helped that if I had a partner that was not yet up to speed we could do a short run, and I could cycle back to another short loop.

Don't forget teh warm up and cool down, that is almost as important as the running it self. I have moved on the bike riding now, but I still jog and walk quite a bit.
