Don't Hold Your Breath

Remember that national telemarketing don't call registry that was going to finally give everyone a simple way to end those annoying telemarketing calls? Well, thanks to Representative Billy Tauzin, who more and more each day looks like Huey Long reincarnated, a monkey wrench has been thrown into the process that will likely delay any action for a year.

There is a jurisdictional issue as to whether the Federal Trade Commission has the authority to impose on telemarketers the $16 million in fees required to start the registry. Tauzin believes that authority is held by the Federal Communications Commission. Hey Billy Bob, who cares? It's a lousy $16 million and would greatly improve the quality of life for many Americans. We can spend $335 billion on defense but can't find a paltry $16 mil to defend our sanity.
