Tell me why did Davis refuse to sign a bill that would have done the same thing a couple months ago when the Legislature tried to do this "tripling" the right way?

I don't know.

But it seems to me that it makes no sense to sign a *new* bill to raise DMV fees when there is already wording in another bill that would raise fees if necessary.

I'll tell you why,

Somehow I figured you would... :)

because he is the slickest of slick politicians, and he wanted to look good to the public and say, "Hey, I don't want to raise your taxes". Then he turns around and removes the rebate (essentially a tax increase that DOES require 2/3 approval) and claims he can't do anything about it, it was removed "automatically".

We can speculate as to the motivation. If his intent was to look like a nice guy, I don't think that worked. Most people aren't aware of the VLF rebate and the trigger to remove it... all they know is Davis is tripling their auto tax.

Now this is way off topic and likley on the wrong board, so I'll stop posting. I'm just baffled; with all the crap that's going on, why are people so worried about registration fees returning to their 1998 levels. It seems to me that there are much larger problems to deal with.....
