Tell that to Warren Buffet, arguably the world's most successful investor.

In addition to what others have said...

The "investments with insurance companies" that have been discussed are annuities and life insurance policies of various flavors.

Reviewing the chart, GEICO is an auto insurance company. Gen Re is a reinsurance company and, although tangentially connected to the life insurance industry, does not directly offer insurance products to individuals. Wesco Financial does some P&C business, but not life. Applied Underwriters offers workers comp insurance to companies. National Indemnity Company appears to offer P&C insurance in limited categories to certain businesses. "CSI" does offer limited "final expense" insurance with benefits up to (apparently) $35,000, but that appears to be limit of their life insurance offerings, so we're talking a pretty darn small niche there. Kansas Bankers Surety Company does not offer anything remotely resembling life insurance. And last, United Liability Insurance Group offers...well, Liability insurance.

If you could point out a life insurance company other than a reinsurer owned by Berkshire Hathaway, I'd be appreciative. AngelMay's vitriol is directed specifically at the purchase by individuals of insurance contracts or annuities which have some form of "investment" component to them (such as almost all forms of permanent insurance and any type of annuity contract, apparently. I have no idea what she would think of purchasing a No Lapse Guarantee Universal Life product from a life insurance company).
