C&EN has article that funds are being collected to acquire and preserve Wardenclyffe on Long Island, the only surviving Tesla Laboratory as a memorial to the famous inventor.

Nikola Tesla is the man behind AC power and AC motors and is famous for Tesla coils and his eccentricities. He was the scientist behind the Westinghouse led competition with Thomas Edison and General Electric, especially AC vs DC.

As I recall he died penniless having agreed to forgo royalties on his patents assigned to Westinghouse to avoid forcing Westinghouse into bankruptcy. Sadly not much of the Westinghouse story is recorded in biographies, but the Westinghouse company survives as modern day CBS (having adopted the CBS name after acquiring the network company).

His main laboratory and most of his papers were lost in a fire. The one on Long Island came later, but at least some of his legacy can be preserved.
