Thank you for recommending this post to our Best of feature.

We all know you hate nukes.

We don't follow the reasoning you use and don't come to the same conclusions, even though I am a Green. A member of the party here in NZ.

Yes, Nuclear Energy IS more expensive than subsidized fossil fuel energy.

It is not more expensive than renewable/sustainable sources where an energy storage component is required.

Don't waste your time, he isn't listening. The last post I read of his was supporting the German building of new lignite*** plants!!! IIRC he assured us they would be shut down once all those solar and wind projects that they now can't afford to build were up and running.

Since lignite or coal plants can be around for a very long time it might happen.

While very expensive or dirty electricity "may" cause politicians to lose their jobs, no electricity "will" cause politicians to lose their jobs. Humans in modern societies do not consider electricity as a "nice to have" but rather a necessity.

While politicians in the US have a pragmatic short term alternative in Nat gas and some opportunities in Hydro, most of the rest of the world including Germany, China, Briton and Japan currently have no such luck. They must mostly either burn the dirtier fossil fuels with the attendant mess or build nuclear power plants for the foreseeable future.

Any <Some people are like a Slinky ... not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.> mouse

*** - lignite is not really coal but rather pre-coal that nature didn't finish with. It is much more filthy than coal.

Primarily because of latent high moisture content of brown coal, carbon dioxide emissions from traditional brown-coal-fired plants are generally much higher than for comparable black-coal plants,

Note: Another source of power becoming popular especially in BC is ROR Hydro.

One of my favourite companies (and largest single holding) that used to just process Nat gas is doing wind, biomass and ROR projects as well. Did I mention a nice dividend? ;-D
